Hmmm... I think it was the increasing straining and distancing between them until that point that made the scene meaningful. Without the context that both of them were a little fed up with each other's faces and struggling with feelings of acceptance (both by others and by themselves), that scene would have no meaning. It would've been just a "sup welcome back", not The Okaeri Scene, you know?
