Faiz 41-47
Feb. 24th, 2009 11:24 pmMan. This last story arc is kind of a downer.
☆ So Kiba's now the president of Smart Brain.It makes perfect sense and is a perfectly logical evolution for the character, according to what he's been all this time. He's so noble and kind, and he wanted to live with and protect humans, and had faith in humans until they destroyed that faith, and at that point... yeah. :/
I really really hope that Takumi can bring him back somehow, but at this point I have to say that the chances that Kiba's story won't end in tragedy are... pretty slim.
Damn it, and they were so CUTE those last few eps before it all went to hell. The smiles and the acting completely like boyfriends who have just gotten together. ;_____;
☆ And well, what pushed Kiba over the edge was Yuka's death. Since I just finished Kabuto about a week or two ago, obviously I'm comparing it to the conclusion of Tsurugi's story arc, because of the date that never was (spoilered out for
muzivitch's benefit). Yuka's death was a HUGE catalyst in Faiz, to an extent that the event I'm comparing it to simply wasn't. The thing... I just never really cared for Yuka. I think it was the fact that she willingly became the victim, from the start, even though she didn't have to (see Kiba), and that annoyed me.
☆ Creepy kid's creepy shadow is CREEPY. :O
☆ I hope Kaidoh doesn't die. D:
☆ Still waiting for more on Kusaka.
☆ PLEASE SAVE YOUR BOYFRIEND, TAKUMI!

Date: 2009-02-25 05:59 pm (UTC)Actually you still need to finish before I can freely talk about it, but this is mostly where I wanted to get the other day when you were talking about how Kiba starts off the little lost boy and through his pain he grows and seemingly becomes stronger than pretty much anyone else in the story... yes, until his illusion of strenght shatters and you see he has grown, he has become strong, but all this time his strenght was based on a very fragile faith that his dream was attainable, that human hearts can be changed. And then you realize that slick hair and expensive trenchcoat or not, he still is that little lost boy with no place in a world where everywhere he turns to refuses his existence.
That was what I wanted to complement. :D
The amusement park date has to be the most d'aaaaaaaaaw♥♥ moment in all of Faiz. Kiba is giggly like a 12 years old girl who's just had her first kiss, Takumi SMILES for the first and last time in the whole series, and even Kusaka feels he and Mari are third-wheeling their little ~love is in the air~ moment.

Date: 2009-02-25 08:12 pm (UTC)The amusement park was adorable, but the whole time I knew it HAD to be the calm before the storm and that the shit was going to hit the fan really fucking fast.
And you kind of wonder, because so much in the plot of the series IS based on random events that push the characters towards one path or another, if he and Takumi hadn't been separated while fighting, if Takumi could have been there with him when he found Yuka's remains, if things might have turned out differently. But then it's should'va, could've, would've, and I think one of the points of the story is what's done it's done, even if it's by chance, and there's no erasing it and it's just the way it is.
Which is actually one of the reasons this story is so great, I think, because in real life a lot of things DO depend on seemingly unimportant details and on chance.

Date: 2009-02-25 08:37 pm (UTC)Possibly because we're watching 6 eps (at least) at a time and it gets a little overwhelming at that point. :D
P.S. I need a Kamen Rider icon but I'm afraid Mura would take it as evidence that she can double her efforts to make me watch even more. >.>

You wouldn't happen to have any of Hide's songs? I just have the one that were used on Saiyuki.

Date: 2009-02-25 10:29 pm (UTC)I do have his single from Ai no Kotodama, lemme zip it up and upload it for you.
And uh. Those Saiyuki songs you have, are they the full versions? Because if they are I totally want them, I've only been able to find the TV sizes.

Date: 2009-02-25 06:19 pm (UTC)1) as much as the "she let herself be the victim" thing is part of why I could never bring myself to feel too sorry for Yuka too, you have to remember we're seeing this as westerners, and there's a huge value dissonance in how we see her character and the way the Japanese audience does. Japan understands the whole bullying thing completely different than we do - to them, Yuka is actually a stronger character because she endured with her bullying quietly instead of asking for help than she would be if she'd told Kotaro or her parents back in her first episode.
2) her death really is not so much supposed to make you feel for her, as to make you feel for Kiba. She's the enabler for Kiba's completely losing it more than she is a martyr.
Other than the obvious killing me with Kiba's change, what really broke my heart about Yuka's death was Keitaro. Poor guy's only had his dreams and his understanding of life fucked sideways since he came in contact with these people, and the one time you think life's gonna give him some kind of karmic compensation, the girl he's loved since before the series started (and who actually loved him back) dies, and no one even has the decency to tell him. Godamnit grimdark Faiz. :´(

Date: 2009-02-25 08:22 pm (UTC)2. ...Yeah, that's the thing when comparing it with you know who.Yuka's death was never ABOUT her, it was never an exploration of her character at all, it was about how it affected everything else, while in Kabuto it WAS very much about the character in question.
And yeah, that sucked for Keitaro. I mean, I guess I get why Takumi didn't say anything, or rather I understand why Takumi, being the guy he is, would feel at a loss and just... not say anything at all. It's full of fail, but SUCH a Takumi thing.

Date: 2009-02-25 09:09 pm (UTC)But yeah, I do get your comparison. But Yuka was never much a character focused on herself, she's always been there as an enabler for other characters to play from - Kiba, Kaido, Keitaro, Takumi and even Mari. Which is the other reason why while I don't dislike her or anything, I don't really empathize much with her.
In the movie, I actually like her quite a bit more. She's given more a more proactive, less responsive personality, so for what little time she's in the movie at all she makes a more lasting impression than she did in the series.

Date: 2009-02-25 09:18 pm (UTC)The other comparison I've been making with Yuki is to Hiyori, and while to be honest, Hiyori is probably the character I like less from Kabuto's main cast (no actual dislike, just kind of indifference to annoyance depending), and while Hiyori is ALSO more a vehicle for Tendou's development (and to a lesser extent, Kagami's) than a fully realized character, I do think one feels or gets to know Hiyori more than Yuka.
It's interesting, comparing the two series. Faiz is better written by far, and a lot of the characters ARE really awesome, but even in the middle of whole trainwrecky time-travel, Hyper Zecter, and storylines dropping like flies, Kabuto somehow managed to make REALLY interesting, magnetic characters that you just kind of get attached to on a gut level.

Date: 2009-02-25 11:44 pm (UTC)My first thought was, oh they wore similar clothes, except the dusters have sleeves and he didn't even try to find boots.
The fact that it's the original outfit (except for the white shoes of fail) makes it EVEN better. They had to plan it and wheedle the outfits out of someone. XD
ETA: Now that I'm looking more closely, you CAN tell that Uchiyama's one sleeve is actually blue. :D;;;
